DEBUT EP

STARFALL

When first planning to release music, we didn't intend on releasing any sort of EP. Eventually, people who knew better than me convinced me that it might be a good idea (as opposed to releasing two full-length albums), and so Starfall was born.

It took a while to choose the songs that would make it onto this snapshot of our work. Songs that would both be accessible to a new audience, and that would get to the core of our sound and vision.

The original lineup included, in order, Starfall, June, and Other Side. Heat made it onto the project after hearing Cristian absolutely kill the vocal demo.

01 - HEAT

This song barely made the cut. Every aspect of it was challenging. The melodies, the guitar parts, and especially the mixing. Though developing a bass tone that could cut through the mix took no small investment of time, Nathan did a fantastic job with the bass parts. No tabs, no lead sheet, nothing. He was able to develop parts completely by ear, despite this track being the most tonally and rhythmically complex of the four.

02 - JUNE

June, like Heat, also barely made the cut, albeit for different reasons. Being the "acoustic" song on the release, the recording process was very different from the rest.

An original demo of it included acoustic guitar, but they key ended up not working out vocally, so the guitar parts had to be scrapped. I'm not an acoustic player, so I had to outsource that part. Still, having faith in the song, I decided we could give it another try in a different key, and it worked out wonderfully.

03 - STARFALL

Starfall is an amalgamation of several older song ideas, including the chorus (2016) and the waltz (2014). It wasn't originally 9 minutes, that's for sure.

I want to shoutout our vocalist, Cristian, for his work particularly on this track. Not only is it a long and difficult (read: high) piece, but he also arranged the 9-part harmonies at the bridge himself.

04 - OTHER SIDE

Other Side is the "oldest" song on our catalog. I wrote the chiptune at the beginning in FamiTracker back in 2014. I have a distinct memory of my high school band teacher listening to it and calling it "boring." He was right, of course. I held onto the idea and remade it a couple times until arriving at what it is now.

The idea for a solo came pretty late, but I knew just the man for the job. Poh Hock (ex-Native Construct, Replacire) had actually been my guitar teacher for half a year. The man can shred, that's for sure. The one-minute solo he devised blended perfectly with the track, and augmented its distinct power-metal energy.
